Background and Expertise
About
Dr. David Marlett is a professor in the Department of Finance, Banking and Insurance at Appalachian State University. He holds the IIANC distinguished professorship and serves as managing director of the Brantley Risk and Insurance Center. Marlett also serves on the Board of Directors for the InVEST program and previously chaired the Loman Advisory Committee for the CPCU Society. He serves as a resource on insurance issues and is a frequent media contributor. During the last year, he has been interviewed and quoted by a wide range of outlets, including the New York Times, CNN, Reuters and NPR.
After completing an eight-year term as department chair in 2014, he took a sabbatical in Christchurch, New Zealand where he studied the recovery from the Canterbury earthquakes.
Marlett has taught courses in risk management and insurance for the last 25 years, starting at Florida State University while in the doctoral program. Prior to graduate school, Marlett worked as a commercial lines underwriter for USF&G in Tampa.
Marlett and his wife have three children and have cared for over a dozen foster children. He is an advocate for foster care and worked with state legislators to enact the Foster Care Family Act in 2015.
