Dr. Paulette Marty, a professor of theatre arts, joined Appalachian State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance in 2004 and teaches theatre history, dramatic literature and directing, as well as cross-disciplinary topics. An award-winning advocate for first-year college students and former director of Appalachian’s General Education Program, Marty has said teaching in the liberal arts classroom is “the most important part of my professional life.”
In addition to creating engaging learning experiences for students on campus, Marty co-leads study abroad programs to Europe to explore historical and contemporary theatre and culture – a highlight being the opportunity for students to visit places like Hampton Court Palace where they can stand in the very room where Shakespeare performed. Marty also serves as a director and intimacy choreographer for campus performances, with recent productions that include “The Moors” by Jen Silverman and “She Kills Monsters” by Qui Nguyen. Her research specialties include contemporary directing, intimacy practices for performance, and Elizabethan theatre and spectacle. Her book, “Contemporary Women Stage Directors,” was published by Methuen Drama in 2019 and she has previously published in various periodicals, including American Theatre, Theatre Survey, Theatre Symposium and Medieval English Theatre.
